A mandala (sanskrit for circle) is an intricate pattern of geometrical fine lines, composed of shapes and symbols that radiate from the centre outwards. 

Mandalas have existed for centuries and a highly regarded art form in hindu and buddhist communities.

Mandala tattoos are incredibly distinctive, characterised by centrally focused designs, often depicting elements such as flowers, trees or stars. Mandalas are generally circular in nature although oval shapes are common, they are always symmetrically balanced.

This style of tattoo is full of symbolic meanings that reflect personal beliefs, spirituality and individual journeys. In religious interpretations, the central point of a mandala represents the self or the universe, while the geometric patterns radiating outwards represent the interconnectedness of life.

Although the style has originated from religious and spiritual practices, a mandala does not need to reflect any specific belief system and can be worn by any body purely for aesthetic purposes.
